Running AI Where There Is No Fibre

A site without terrestrial connectivity can still run inference locally. What it cannot do is go unmanaged, and that is the problem worth solving first.

A plantation, a mine site, a remote clinic or a vessel can all run inference locally. The accelerator does not care where it is. What breaks is everything around it.

Local inference is the easy part

An edge machine drawing a few hundred watts from an ordinary socket will serve a model all day without a rack, a raised floor or a cooling plant. If the job is classifying images from a camera or answering questions against a local document set, the compute problem is already solved.

Management is the part that is not

That machine still needs patching. It needs its model updated. It needs someone to see it has stopped before a person on site notices. None of that works over a link that is unavailable, and dispatching an engineer to a site four hours away to reboot a box is what turns a cheap deployment into an expensive one.

So the connectivity question is not about serving traffic. It is about whether the site can be operated at all without sending someone there.

What satellite changes

A link that installs in an afternoon changes what a site survey concludes. Sites that were rejected because fibre was quoted at eighteen months become viable, and the deployment stops waiting on a civil works programme it does not control.

It is not a replacement for terrestrial capacity where terrestrial capacity exists. Latency and contention are what they are. For a management path, telemetry, model distribution and remote hands, that is entirely sufficient.

The practical constraints

Power budget: the terminal draws seventy-five to a hundred watts, which matters on solar or generator supply. Mounting: the obstruction map decides the bracket before anything is drilled. And the cable run follows walls rather than the straight line on the plan, which is the most common reason an installation needs a second visit.
